Origin

Specialty coffee from Peru

2 single-origin lots, roasted by Guido Roastery.

Peru ranks around ninth in world coffee production at roughly 4.2 million 60-kg bags per year, but specialty coffee remained largely invisible on international menus until 2017, when the Cup of Excellence held its first competition there. That debut changed the conversation: five lots scored above 90 points, producers from Cajamarca, Cusco and Amazonas entered international auctions for the first time, and the country's generic clean-and-balanced label gave way to specific farm names and verifiable altitudes. Specialty now accounts for about 20% of Peru's coffee export value.

Coffee grows on the eastern Andean slopes in the ceja de selva transition zone, between 800 and 2,200 metres, where cool mountain air meets Amazon humidity and sharp diurnal swings slow cherry maturation. Cajamarca in the north (1,600-2,100 m) produces coffees with bright citric acidity and dark chocolate. Cusco in the south, in the Amaybamba and Inkawasi valleys (1,400-2,300 m), leans toward milk chocolate, brown sugar and stone fruit, with SL9 "Gesha Inca" lots at the top elevations adding jasmine, bergamot and tropical fruit. SL9 was long assumed to be Panamanian Geisha; genetic research has since identified it as an Ethiopian-lineage cultivar from Kenya's Scott Laboratories, making Peru the world's main showcase for this rediscovered variety.

Peru is also the world's leading exporter of certified organic coffee, with around 90,000 ha under organic certification and over 100,000 producers involved. Remote highland farms have used low-input systems by necessity for generations; cooperatives formalised those practices into certifications that opened European markets. Guido carries two Peru lots with full traceability: Cajamarca from a group of small local producers (1,200-1,800 m), and Hugo Marino of Finca Santa Monica in the Amaybamba valley, Cusco, at 2,150 metres. Hugo Marino placed second at CoE Peru 2021 with a score of 90.08 and has been rated 94 points by Coffee Review for his SL9 Gesha Inca.
